St. Augustine is known for its character. From historic homes and Mediterranean-inspired architecture to coastal cottages and newer contemporary residences, the homes throughout St. Augustine and St. Johns County reflect a wide range of architectural styles.
A custom swimming pool should complement that character—not compete with it.
At Ancient City Pools & Design, we believe the best pool designs feel like a natural extension of the home. The shape of the pool, materials, decking, colors, landscaping and outdoor living features can all work together to create a backyard that feels intentional, inviting and uniquely yours.
Old Florida Style: Relaxed and Timeless
For homes with traditional, coastal or Old Florida character, a pool design with softer lines and natural materials can create a relaxed backyard retreat.
Freeform pools, natural stone or paver decking, lush landscaping and subtle water features can complement the casual aesthetic associated with Florida living. A tanning ledge or integrated spa can add functionality without making the pool feel overly formal.
The goal is often to create a space that feels as though it has always belonged in the backyard.
Mediterranean-Inspired Homes: Classic Details Meet Outdoor Living
St. Augustine’s Spanish and Mediterranean influences can provide plenty of inspiration for pool design.
Geometric pool shapes, elegant tile, warm-toned materials, arches, fountains and carefully selected landscaping can enhance the architectural details of the home. A raised spa or water feature can also create visual interest while reinforcing the home’s traditional character.
For a Mediterranean-style residence, the pool becomes more than a place to swim. It can serve as an architectural element that ties the house and outdoor spaces together.
Coastal Homes: Light, Open and Relaxed
For homes near St. Augustine’s beaches, a coastal-inspired pool can emphasize the relaxed character of the surrounding environment.
Clean lines, lighter materials, natural textures and strategically placed landscaping can create a seamless transition between the home, pool and backyard. Features such as a tanning ledge, spa or outdoor lounge can make the space equally suited to everyday relaxation and entertaining.
The key is to capture the feeling of coastal living without relying on overly themed design elements.
Modern Homes: Clean Lines and Strong Geometry
Contemporary homes often lend themselves to a more structured pool design.
Geometric pools with straight lines can echo the architecture of a modern home, while large-format decking and minimalist landscaping can reinforce a clean, sophisticated aesthetic.
Integrated spas, dramatic lighting, linear water features and carefully positioned fire features can add visual interest while maintaining a streamlined appearance.
In modern pool design, every element matters because there are fewer decorative details to distract from the overall composition.
Your Pool Should Reflect Your Home—and Your Lifestyle
Architectural style is an important starting point, but it isn’t the only consideration.
The best pool design also reflects how you plan to use your outdoor space. Do you envision quiet mornings by the water? Weekend gatherings with family and friends? A place for children to play? An outdoor kitchen and entertaining area? A private retreat after a long day?
These questions help determine everything from the pool’s shape and size to the placement of a spa, tanning ledge, outdoor kitchen, seating areas and landscaping.
Creating a Backyard That Feels Like Home
There isn’t one “right” pool design for a St. Augustine home. A historic-inspired residence may call for a completely different approach than a new contemporary home—and that’s the advantage of building a custom pool.
At Ancient City Pools & Design, we bring more than 20 years of experience in pool construction and design to each project. Our goal is to create outdoor spaces that complement the home, fit the property and reflect the way each family wants to live.
Whether your style is Old Florida, Mediterranean, coastal, contemporary or somewhere in between, your pool can be designed to feel like it belongs.
